The Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD) is proud to announce that 90 members of the Marshalltown High School (MHS) Class of 2026 have earned the Iowa Seal of Biliteracy, a distinction awarded by the Iowa Department of Education in recognition of students who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one additional language.
To earn the Seal of Biliteracy, students must meet state-established proficiency benchmarks in English and successfully complete an approved assessment in another world language. The recognition highlights students’ ability to communicate effectively across languages and cultures while preparing them for success in college, careers, and an increasingly interconnected world.
This year, the number of students earning the Seal of Biliteracy increased from last year, reflecting the continued dedication and multilingual talents of Marshalltown High School students. Students demonstrated proficiency in the following languages: Spanish, Hakha Chin, Korean, and Indonesian.
Biliteracy represents more than the ability to speak multiple languages. Students who are biliterate demonstrate strong skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in more than one language, showcasing a deeper level of language mastery and literacy.
“The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes the hard work, determination, and cultural strengths our students bring to Marshalltown High School,” said Rachel Inks, English Learner and Migrant Program Coordinator. “Earning this distinction not only validates their language proficiency, but also creates opportunities for college credit, career advancement, and stronger connections within our diverse community.”
Marshalltown High School Principal Justin Boliver said the achievement reflects students’ commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning.
“We are incredibly proud of these students and the dedication they have shown in developing proficiency in multiple languages,” Boliver said. “Their achievement demonstrates perseverance, global awareness, and the ability to communicate across cultures, skills that will serve them well in their future education and careers while also enriching our entire Bobcat community.”
Students earning the Seal of Biliteracy were recognized during Senior Awards Night, and will wear a commemorative medal during the Marshalltown High School Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 31.
