Isaac Benscoter and Isaac Seberger

Marshalltown Community School District is proud to announce that Marshalltown High School (MHS) students Isaac Benscoter and Isaac Seberger have earned first place in the Senior Group Performance category at the 2025 National History Day (NHD) National Contest held in Maryland.

Their winning entry, titled “Tinker v. Des Moines: Taking Responsibilities for Students’ Rights,” delivered a compelling and well-researched performance that explored the landmark Supreme Court case and its lasting impact on student expression and civil liberties.

This prestigious national achievement is a result of months of dedication, creativity, and hard work. Benscoter and Seberger competed against top student historians from across the country, showcasing not only academic excellence but also a deep commitment to understanding and communicating complex historical topics.

“I am extremely proud of the two Isaacs. They not only delivered a great performance at the national contest, but their project also demonstrated their ability to make a compelling argument supported by historical facts, understand a complex topic from multiple viewpoints, and communicate that story in a creative and powerful way,” said Susan Fritzell, MHS NHD advisor. “The skills they have mastered will serve them well in any future career they pursue.”

National History Day is a nonprofit education program that engages over half a million middle and high school students around the world annually in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. The yearlong program culminates in a national contest each June at the University of Maryland, where students present their work in various formats such as exhibits, papers, websites, documentaries, and performances.

“This recognition reflects the kind of academic and creative excellence we strive to foster across our district,” said Dr. Theron Schutte, Superintendent of MCSD. “We are incredibly proud of both students for embracing the lead and representing Marshalltown with such distinction on a national stage.”
