WATERLOO — The Marshalltown softball team scored its first two wins of the season by stomping out a doubleheader sweep of Waterloo East, taming the Trojans 13-0 and 17-1 in a pair of four-inning games.
The Bobcats (2-1) scored six times in their first at-bat and kept the pressure up all night, scoring in seven of eight innings. Kaelyn Coleman hit a three-run home run to cap Marshalltown’s six-run eruption, and Laney Danielson hit two homers in the second game to keep it rolling.
Briley Danielson pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener, striking six while walking none. Gianna Baune led off the game with a double and finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Laney Danielson had a two-run single in the first inning and an RBI single in the third to go 2-for-3, while Coleman also went 2-for-3. Kate Sandvick added a two-run single to help MHS to its first win of the young season.
Hanna Osgood allowed just two hits while striking out four and hitting a batter in the complete-game pitching performance in Game 2 for the Bobcats. The Marshalltown bats backed her with 14 hits, including Laney Danielson’s big game.
Just hours after signing to play volleyball at Grand View University, Danielson hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run shot during the Bobcats’ seven-run fourth inning. She finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs.
