MCSD Residents Invited to PPEL Informational Meetings

Residents of the Marshalltown Community School District are invited to take part in two upcoming informational meetings to learn about the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) on the ballot Tuesday, March 5.

The information meetings will take place on the following dates:

Questions can be submitted in advance of the information meetings via an online form available at https://forms.gle/qmRMNBvcr44f3Tcn7. A recording of the virtual meeting will also be available for later viewing on the district’s website, at www.marshalltown.k12.ia.us.

A PPEL is a voter-approved levy that generates funds that can only be used for infrastructure and equipment repairs, purchases, and improvements. More than 83% of Iowa school districts rely on a voted PPEL, including Marshalltown CSD.

“The voted PPEL provides our school district with critical funds that are used to address many facility needs and finance equipment purchases throughout the year,” said Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte. “I hope our community members will take advantage of these opportunities to learn more about the ways PPEL provides our students with a quality place to learn and be successful.”

The voted PPEL on the March ballot will have a levy rate of $1.34 per $1,000 of taxable property value. Marshalltown CSD’s current rate of $0.67 will sunset in June 2025. The district is positioned financially to increase the voted PPEL rate without raising the district’s overall tax levy of $15.99.

Without approval, the district will lose access to funds that finance things like roof repairs, HVAC system maintenance, school security upgrades, technology equipment purchases, and vehicle replacement, among other needs.
